Myakka is old Florida, away from the usual vacation spots, crowded beaches, and the hustle and bustle.

HISTORY:

Myakka River Ranch sits on what was a large ranch that was a cattle operation for generations. The ranch was sold and divided off into smaller parcels in the mid 1990's. Our small piece of paradise is one of the smaller tracts.

Miakka or Old Miakka was settled around 1850 by a party of cattlemen. The population in 1885 was estimated to be about 100 people. At the turn of the century, Miakka residents had established a school, church, post office, country store, and telephone service.

Old Miakka is older and less developed than Myakka City which is about 15 miles to the northeast. Myakka City was settled almost overnight as a planned development, designed to take advantage of the new East and West Coast Railroad line. Both the railroad and Myakka City were officially opened April 28, 1915. The town grew fast, and an ad placed in a local newspaper later that year read:

"Where the railroad crosses the Myakka River in the center of the Fruit Farms’ tract of 10,000 acres is located in that new wonderful Myakka City. Myakka is a Florida of vast cattle ranches, citrus groves, forests, rivers, and streams".

THINGS TO DO:

There are many activities for nature enthusiasts nearby including a visit to Myakka River State Park. It's is one of the oldest and largest parks in Florida and only a 15 minute drive from the ranch. Bring your horses and spend the day exploring miles of equestrian trails.

The Myakka River, designated as a Florida Wild and Scenic River, flows through 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks, and pinelands. Bring your hiking boots and enjoy the trails! Want to learn about the Florida Cracker culture? Visit the Crowley Nature Museum just down the road or take a short drive to the Cracker Trail Museum and Village located in nearby Zolfo Springs.

Spend the day shopping for antiques in nearby Arcadia or go canoeing at the Canoe Outpost on the Peace River. Visit our local Vineyard at Rosa Fiorelli Winery & Vineyard or pick fresh strawberries and veggies at the Hydro-Taste U pick market.

Civilization is a short drive away! Enjoy the white, sandy beaches of Lido or Siesta Key. Stroll along St. Armands Circle and brows the shops or dine at Columbia Restaurant, a Florida favorite.
